Thai Massage: From the Nation's Pride to a World Recognition
Since 2019, Thai Massage has been recognized by UNESCO to be an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. this is Thailand's second award following Khon's recognition in 2018.
Thai Massage is a form of body manipulation that alleviates pain through the release of tension in the muscles. It is a quintessential Thai art that does not only use internal medicine but also redresses the balance of energy in the body.
This collection of stamps is part of the Thai Heritage series. In each of the 4 stamps, is features Hermits in different yogi positions. The drawings originate from a book collecting 80 Hermit yogi poses that was published in 1838, during the reign of King Rama III.
Hermit yogi poses have originated since the reign of King Rama I. It is evident in ancient medical recipes are well as a collection of Hermit sculptures, placed around the Salas of Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimon Mangkhalaram Rajwaramahawihan (Wat Pho). People were encourage to study these stretches to combat illness and improve health. The exercises were known to be used after long meditations to relieve strains on the body. Later on, King Rama III, alongside a Royal Scholar, composed a set of poems to instruct and recognized its beneficial qualities.
Designs: Contorted hermit exercise from original manuscript, which His Majesty King Nangklao commissioned the inscribing of massage texts, served as the source of the traditional Thai medical knowledge at Wat Phra Chetuphon (Wat Pho)
